A little slice of home in Roppongi

The New Zealand Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, the government owned Air New Zealand and a Japanese company, opened the New Zealand Travel Cafe in Roppongi near Roppongi Hills and Tokyo Midtown last December.

I've been there a few times but most recently this week with Jacob. It serves New Zealand delights - food, wine and beer for starters. Of more importance though is Hokey Pokey Tip Top ice cream!

Beer is crap at the best of times. I can only consume a mouthful or two of it and I'm over it, but as crap arse as Speights, Steinlager and Tui is, it just gives you a feeling of being at home. I'd hate to pee on New Zealand's parade but all Lion Brewery brewed products including Speights is actually now Japanese beer! Kirin Breweries from Japan have recently acquired New Zealand based Lion Breweries.

Anyway the tucker was good. Had a kiwi burger which contained a prime New Zealand beef pattie, lettuce, tomato and "something red" (as described by staff when ordering) which we later discovered to be beetroot! It was pretty yummy! Price wasn't so bad either considering it's mostly imported food.

They have a little retail section too which I took note of what was in stock. They sell a range of New Zealand wine, beer, cheese, Tip Top, preserves, music and books. I'll be sure to call in again when I'm in the area.
